Abilities & Species Registry
This is where we keep track of what characters have what abilities, or who might be another species entirely (or interspecies). This is for your visibility and so we can post when we've hit our max on any abilities or species (meaning they're no longer allowed during character creation). We try to keep things as balanced as possible on the site. All registrations are tagged on this thread as we accept characters.

Getting to know the disease: So you want to become a Vampire

The Perks of Being A Vampire:
How to Kill (or at least bother) A Vampire:
First things first, this is not the supernatural, magical beautifying cure-all. In fact, it’s a little bit of a pain in the ass if you ask any self-respecting vampire what they think about their living-impaired state. Vampirism is a blood-borne disease, which usually involves some of the vampire’s blood getting into the victim’s system. It’s a rather unusual occurrence, but it does occasionally happen, and once it does, it’s not a done deal that you WILL become a vampire. For whatever the reason, the vampire disease seems to actually infect those with less degrees of magic in their blood –less magical blood likely has a harder time fighting off the magical illness. That being said, there are no pureblood vampires, but half-blood wizards, muggleborns and muggles all have the chance of becoming a vampire. (Fun Fact: Vampire Blood was used as a poisoning agent in the Middle Ages when pureblood wizarding families tried to kill each other. It was often the collecting of said blood that proved most fatal.)
Vampires are far from the strongest creatures in the Potterverse, but they pose a significant enough threat (considering humans are at the top of their very small food pyramid – it’s more like a square, really) to wizarding and muggle kind that the various ministries and governments around the world file them under the Being Division in the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures.
What you were when you were turned, will very much determine how the Ministry of Magic will respond to you. If you were a muggle, then the Ministry can breathe a sigh of relief that they do not have a wand-toting bloodthirsty vampire running around with the ability to body-bind potential victims and drain them like a bathtub. If you are a wizard, then you’ll likely have to go through the some nasty hoops in order to get where you want to be.
First things first, depending on what country you are in, your wand will likely be confiscated. This is the first step in determining your risk factor, and you will likely be put on 10 years observation before they determine you’re safe enough to warrant the return of your wand. 9 times out of 10, you will likely have a Ministry-assigned retainer from the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures to keep you in line, whom you must check in with once every month or so; think of a prisoner out on parole and having to check in with a parole officer.
Additional Information:
You Can Not:
- Instantly become gorgeous. Either you died pretty or you didn’t. Sorry. (You can sustain your appearance at whatever age you died at, so long as you keep drinking blood, however)
- Have red eyes.
- Have strength on par with a troll. You have above average strength, but don’t overdo it. You cannot snap wands in half, or box with the whomping willow.
- Sparkle. There is no sparkling.
- Instantly become this sexy, charming, irresistible creature whom naught can find fault with. You have flaws.
- Put on sunglasses and can instantly go outside. The sun will burn you. Yes there are certain spells and possibly specially designed cloaks that can minimize the damage or block the sunlight from reaching your skin, but it’s often not worth the risk.
- Have Retractable Fangs. Yes you have fangs, but they do not retract. They are permanent all year long, for however long you live.
- Have a reflection. Or a shadow. A strong enough magical mirror may be able to hold a reflection but it’s not likely.
- Apparate. Having the ability to move very fast as well as apparate seems like cheating, doesn’t it? Even if you were a wizard who knew how to do this when you were turned.
- You cannot become a vampire if you are already a werewolf. No. The two diseases will cancel each other out, and you’ll die. Painfully. Don’t try it.
You Do:
- Have a strong aversion to sunlight. Too much light exposure will kill you. You are weaker during daylight hours, feeling fatigued and probably a little bit cranky. You are no longer a morning person.
You are also no longer a club person; vampires and strobing lights? Ow. - Have to trim your nails and cut your hair regularly. For whatever the reason, they grow out quite quickly, and quite long.
- Have an intense craving for blood, at least in the beginning. It generally stops becoming this all-consuming urge after the first 5 or 6 years of being on a steady blood diet, but a starved vampire will attack anything and everything if they’ve gone without blood long enough.
- Have the option of deciding what to feed on. Studies have shown that one of the twelve uses of dragon's blood is that it can sustain a vampire far longer than human blood can, unfortunately, this is also a challenging commodity to obtain and most vampires choose something a little easier to catch (i.e., humans). Wealthier vampires can usually afford it, however. Some hospitals, in severe cases of vampirism, may prescribe a small dosage of it to help regulate a young vampire and get them transitioned away from human blood onto some other sort of substitute.
- For some peculiar reason, vampires occasionally turn up with more vocal prowess than the average witch or wizard; for example, heartthrob singer Lorcan d’Eath is part vampire. Another historical case, Blodwyn Bludd, the famous “Vampire from the Valleys” was known for singing in a rich baritone voice before biting his victims in the neck. (Taken from the Harry Potter Lexicon) Because of this unusual propensity to lure in victims with their voices, vampires cannot represent themselves in magical courts, and all statements made in their defense must be written down.
- If you live long enough, you may actually gain enough control of one’s self to turn into ONE of the following; bat, rat, moth, wolf and owl. You can only transform at night, no exceptions. This is very difficult for a muggle-turned-vampire, as it has much to do with the person having already been magical at their time of death for this sort of thing to be possible. *
*Note: ask admin permission to give your vampire character the ability to transform, and the selections can be randomized for you if your character meets the age requirements (125 years+). Turning into a wolf or owl is the rarest out of the 5 possibilities, with moths and bats being the most common. Yes, I am aware that a vampire moth is not all that intimidating or what you would necessarily call ‘cool’, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t useful. - You have to be invited into most residential homes and privately owned shops; you can go into the Ministry of Magic and Gringotts without invitation because they’re considered public buildings, though more often than not you’ll receive an official summons from the Ministry, which takes care of that little problem. You are welcome inside public drinking houses (the permission is in the name, public), You are also welcome in shops that have the sign “Vampires Welcome” in their windows (more common in Knockturn Alley than Diagon Alley), and considering Honeydukes offers blood-flavored lollipops, you are presumably allowed inside. Vampires cannot go to Hogwarts without an invitation – written or otherwise.
The Perks of Being A Vampire:
Above average strength (don’t go overboard, you are not the hulk)
Above average speed (the biggest ‘perk’ to vampires, and the reason why teams of ministry wizards are often employed to deal with them, they can sometimes be too fast to properly target)
Potential to turn into one of the following; a bat, rat, moth, wolf and owl.
Near-Perfect Night Vision
Charming/beautiful singing or speaking voice (sometimes, not standard to the species)
How to Kill (or at least bother) A Vampire:
Vulnerability to sunlight and some light-based spells.
Vulnerable to the killing curse (though it is not recommended against fighting vampires, as you have a very high chance of missing and instead hitting someone else).
Vampires can be staked and killed, as long as it’s in the heart.
Vampires can be decapitated.
A bite from a fully transformed werewolf can kill a vampire, but the circumstances for these two creatures to even meet is a bit difficult to put together.
Vampires can be killed with fire. They are particularly vulnerable to Fiendfyre (though what isn’t).
A vampire will die if they have not had blood in more than a week.
A vampire cannot cast a patronus, and have sometimes been attacked by one if the caster feels especially threatened by the vampire(s) present.
An aversion to garlic, they break out into a rash if they come in direct contact with it. One of the quickest and earliest established vampire-detection methods

INFORMATION
Goblins are an intelligent race of magical, humanoid folk. They're described as significantly shorter than most races with long fingers and feet; pointed, elongated noses; and large, pointed ears. Goblins exist in the wizarding world just like humans, and work jobs the same as any other wizardkind. Their diets consist of meat, roots, and fungi, primarily. Culturally, goblins live varying but similar lives to other wizardkind. Their family reunions are often out in the countryside, with large groups of goblins from all generations. Their family units are typically tight.
From the outsider, they seem like a cold, stoic race. To most in their families, they're warm and inviting--always feeding their youngest, always proud of their brightest. Because of the work they often do being fairly lucrative, their holidays involve being showered in gifts. However, the oldest to make the youngest toil for the best. Goblins use the language Gobbledegook, and they're most often adept metalsmiths notable for their silverwork. Historically, they minted coins for wizarding currency. Due to their skills with money and finances, they have controlled the wizarding economy to a large extent and run Gringotts Wizarding Bank. Someone who was part or whole goblin wouldn't only be interested in metalsmithing, but it wouldn't be a surprise if they took up a similar job. With their ability to pick up on languages and mechanical work, a goblin is set up to succeed in any field they so choose.
Goblins do have a tendency to experience mild discrimination. While they're often respected, their stoicism can make them hard to get to know or work with. This doesn't mean they're cruel, but it's expected that they're more to the point than other creatures and humans who might dance around a problem. Interspecies marriages and families aren't unheard of, but they can come with their own challenges, from cuisine to language to manner of tongue. Consider in what ways your family might experience some culture shock from canoodling with goblins! With time, there's a chance they could all come to love each other in their own ways, but what challenges might they come with? It's also not unheard of to deal with divisiveness in any blended family environment.

INFORMATION
A Metamorphmagus (pl. Metamorphmagi) is a witch or wizard with the ability to change his or her physical appearance at will, rather than requiring Polyjuice Potion or a spell like the rest of the wizarding population. They are extremely rare. Unlike Animagi, Metamorphmagi can take a wide variety of forms, changing sex and age, potentially looking like anyone at all, or even just changing a part of their appearances, such as the shape of their noses. Animagi also transform at will, but only into one animal form which is determined by their inner traits. It is never revealed if Metamorphmagi can take the full form of an animal, however it is very likely to be true if practiced hard enough and with the right skills. Also, a Metamorphmagus is born, not made; it is not a skill that can be learned. There also seems to be a degree of heritability, so someone within a character's family tree could have held the ability and passed through generations.
WHAT CAN & CAN'T I CHANGE?
You can change small things, such as facial features, hair, eyes, nose, small things which are easy to change. As mentioned above, there is no evidence stating that Metamorphmagi can change into animals, but for the sake of the site we are not allowing this. If you wish to change into an animal, please feel free to apply for the Animagi ability instead.
HOW DO I ROLE PLAY METAMORPHING?
Of course however you feel comfortable with the ability. What is stated in the HPverse, is that it takes a great deal of intense concentration to transform. Although, the more experienced characters may also find it easier to morph as they get older. We would assume that transforming continuously would make a character pass out, so it'd be pretty bad for your characters' health! If you are unsure, feel free to talk to an admin about some ideas on how to RP morphing.

INFORMATION
Adults can, in fact, be both an Occlumens and a Legilimens, but since it is difficult to gain knowledge of one this standard is closely looked over. You cannot use either power to gain knowledge outside of your particular history and thread. You cannot suddenly discover the secret Dark Wizards plans or knowledge of an Order hideout without being in a thread which states their plots. This can cause plotting issues, and is against the god modding/bunnying rules.
As this practice is extremely hard to learn, only two spots will be open for exceptional students upon plotting wise. If you feel your character could learn these abilities, feel free to PM the admin to set up a plot to learn.
WHAT ARE OCCULMENS & LEGILIMENS
Occlumency
The act of magically closing one's mind against Legilimency. It is ancient, and has existed since medieval times. It can prevent a Legilimens from accessing one's thoughts and feelings, or influencing them. A person who practises this art is known as an Occlumens. The most basic form of Occlumency, judging from Severus Snape's early lessons on the subject to Harry Potter, involves clearing one's mind — making it "blank and empty" — in order to prevent a Legilimens from perceiving one's emotions and thoughts. More advanced Occlumency involves suppressing only the thoughts, emotions, and memories that would contradict whatever it is an Occlumens wishes a Legilimens to believe; hence, it is not obvious that Occlumency is being used even if the person is lying. It requires a great deal of willpower, as with resisting the Imperius Curse, as well as a high degree of mental and emotional discipline. It is also one method of resisting the influence of Veritaserum.
Legilimency
The act of magically navigating through the many layers of a person's mind and correctly interpreting one's findings. A person who practises this art is known as a Legilimens. Muggles might call this "mind-reading," but practitioners disdain the term as naive. The opposite of Legilimency is Occlumency, which may be used to shield one's mind from the invasion and influence of a Legilimens. The most advanced Legilimens can perform Legilimency nonverbally and wandlessly, but less talented practitioners must use the incantation Legilimens to enter their victim's mind. If a target is not skilled in Occlumency, a Legilimens will be able to detect if the person is lying, as well as delve into their thoughts, emotions, and memories. Highly skilled Legilimens can also influence a mind that they invade; for example, Lord Voldemort, considered perhaps the most skilled Legilimens of his time, was able to send Harry Potter incredibly realistic visions of the Department of Mysteries and his godfather, and later to temporarily possess him (the latter of which was extremely painful to Harry, to the point where he begged Dumbledore to kill him, just to relieve him of the pain). It is easier to perform Legilimency when the target and practitioners' eyes meet.

WHAT IS AN ANIMAGUS
An Animagus is a special ability acquired by a dedicated wizard to learn the art of changing form into an animal matched by their personality (See below for more information). Only very powerful and skilled wizards are able to become Animagi. The process of becoming an Animagus is long and arduous - taking 7 years to perfect. This ability has the potential to backfire and cause the transformation to go horribly wrong if not mastered. Once the initial training is over, an Animagus can change at will at any time, with or without a wand. As it takes along time to learn this ability, students are not permitted to become Animagi unless invited (see below). If you are an adult please add the study into your history of your profile with a reason why they wanted to study such an intense and difficult mastery. If your profile has not included the history of his ability, your request for Animagi will not be accepted.
Animagi are not werewolves, and can not they turn into Unicorns or Dragons or anything 'magical'. All animagi are usually small creatures, or an animal based off the characters' personality. If the creature is something ridiculous like a wild african elephant, I will not accept your request. Some examples: Cat, Beetle, Dog, Stag, Falcon.
You can find more in-depth information about Animagus here: HP Wiki
ONE ANIMAL PER MEMBER
If you have more than one character, you have to choose which character you would like to have the Animagus Ability. Not everyone has or needs to have this ability, but seeing as it is extremely popular, there are only a few positions available. Spots will be opened upon an influx of members and the site demands it, or upon an activity check there may be spots available.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT ANIMAL FORM
As the HPWiki has kindly informed that Animagi can only take on the form of one specific animal. This animal form is not chosen by the wizard, but determined by their personality and inner traits. An Animagus in animal form is also not restrained by the lifespan limit of the creature that they otherwise transform into, seen in the case of Wormtail, who stayed in the form of a rat for at least twelve years, remaining alive despite the fact that rodents have a short lifespan. Each Animagus bears an identifying mark on their animal form that is caused by something on their human body. This may be a physical trait like dental structure, or an acquired trait such as glasses. EG, Minerva McGonagall has markings on her Animagus form caused by her spectacles. If an Animagus undergoes a major physical change, such as the loss of a limb, their animal form will also reflect that, as in the case of Peter Pettigrew's finger.
CAN I BE AN UNREGISTERED ANIMAGUS
Unfortunately not on the site. While it is known in HarryPotter-verse that there are a number of unregistered Animagi floating around, we find it too hard to manage everyone on the site who decide to become an 'unregistered' Animagus. This causes conflict with members who are doing the right thing and registering, and those who haven't registered. If you have stated in your character application that your character is an unregistered animagus, I will get you to change this. If I find that you have started RPing in Animagus form, you will be banned most probably without warning. After all, you've read these rules before applying - haven't you?
CAN ANIMAGI USE MAGIC
If you're an animal you don't have any magical ability. No use of the wand, and no spell incantations, no wandless magic. In animagus form, your character is just as vulnerable as any ordinary wizard. There is evidence however, that some animagi in their animal form may communicate with other animals - how, this is unknown, but we assume it would be like cats meowing and being able to communicate. Eg; Peter Pettigrew could communicate with other Rats in his Animagi form to find the location of Voldemort.
ANIMAGI TRAINING (STUDENTS)
Animagi in training is basically any fifth, sixth or seventh years who have been deemed 'talented' from the Ministry and Hogwarts for a special training program. There are only three spots available. These students will have a mentor who will teach how to use the ability, either a professor or a Ministry Worker. Part of their training is that they are unsure of what animal they can focus on until the first few sessions of their training, as the animal is in conjunction with their personality and the student must learn more about themselves before mastering the ability. Those who wish to apply will need to PM admin, or an Admin will select a student for the advancement of a plot.

INFORMATION
Lycanthropy is a magical disease that’s spread through saliva when it comes into contact with the bloodstream of a person; so it's a disease that spreads through bites. This causes the person to feel ill during the week up to the full moon and the transformation comes into full effect on the night of the full moon, where the wizard/witch becomes a fully-grown wolf. You can find more in-depth information on HP Wiki.
Werewolves can be easily distinguished from regular wolves by several small distinguishing characteristics, such as the pupils of the eyes, the snout shape, and the tufted tail.
Aside from all of that, werewolves are similar to fully grown wolves, except longer snouts, the pupils are human-like and the tail is shorter and tufty. It doesn't mean they won't get savage, though. If the werewolf in question wasn't exposed to the Wolfsbane potion, they will attack and mess you up.
UPDATE
In the past, students weren't allowed in Hogwarts as it was dangerous for them to transform in the presence of so many people. Dumbledore was the first to allow Remus Lupin to study in Hogwarts, and accommodated a place for Remus to transform (the Shrieking Shack). Currently, the school is establishing a program for student werewolves to be able to run around as a werewolf without any incident; the Hospital Wing is starting to develop Wolfsbane and there are various staff members who are Animagi. So it's not all bad for a student to be able to cope with the disease now than it was before.
Personality-wise, there are students that won't be able to cope with the transformation (even with the aid of Wolfsbane), and will go mad or alienate their friends and loved ones. Others can be able to cope with it and be able to live out their lives as any other normal wizard. This, obviously, helps if they're exposed to the Wolfsbane potion.
Here on this site, we do not allow born werewolves. All must be bitten or contaminated via blood/blood contact.
KILLING A WEREWOLF
In the HP Universe, werewolves aren't affected by silver. As they're an animal, they'd be subject to most spells and curses. Of course, this creates a drawback in the sense that the person would receive aftereffects when the wolf transforms back into a human. Just like any other living being, the Unforgivable curses will work. It doesn't mean, however, that it's allowed to do so (in character-wise).
TRANSFORMATIONS
The transformations are painful, as it’s a transformation from a human to a wolf. This, obviously, puts a great strain on the body during the week up to the full moon as the body is preparing itself. This makes the victim irritable, moody, gives them aches and pains all over their joints and muscles. A way to subdue the worse effects of it is the Wolfsbane potion, where its effect is to mitigate most of the physical pain of the transformation, and it lets the victim retain their mental state as a wolf. When it happens, the victim keeps their wits and can be able to fully interact with humans and animals without the need to bite them to spread the virus.
Keeping with the theme, when a wizard is an Animagus, they can run around with the werewolf without the hazard of infection. As the virus is only classified as a danger to humans, animals don't get infected.
Werewolves do not have 'superhuman abilities'. They might be a slight bit quicker than a non-werewolf, but they do not have 'super speed'. They also do not have 'super strength'. Muscle definition may be increased due to the issue of muscles tearing, ripping and reforming 3 nights out of a month (during the full moon). They do have dog-like hearing, as well as dog-like scent capabilities. Emotions give off different scents due to body changes, and like animals, werewolves can smell these changes.

PARSELTONGUE ABILITY
Parseltongue is the language of serpents (as well as other magical serpent-based creatures, like the Runespoor) and those who can converse with them. An individual who can speak Parseltongue is known as a Parselmouth. It is a very uncommon skill, and is typically hereditary. Nearly all known Parselmouths are descended from Salazar Slytherin with Harry Potter being a notable exception. While there could be many other people out there with the talent, not every parseltongue is a Dark Wizard... but it is more than likely because of the descendant lineage, and the association with Slytherin.
GENERAL INFO
Parseltongue is, when spoken, a hissing sound, similar to that of a snake; as such, normal people cannot understand it. Aside from serpent-based creatures, Parselmouths can communicate with each other with the language. Example; as Harry understood Tom Riddle's commands to the Serpent of Slytherin, and the House of Gaunt communicate with each other almost exclusively in Parseltongue. While inherited, Parseltongue usually requires the speaker to face a snake-based creature or object shaped like a snake (e.g. a carving); more proficient speakers may be able to speak it at will, as the Gaunt family was very proficient in the language - enough so for Morfin to speak to Bob Ogden with it, while Voldemort could speak to the Statue of Slytherin to release the basilisk.

INFORMATION
This gift isn't something someone can learn. Usually it is passed through the blood veins of generations of purebloods, it's more rare to have this ability if you're Half Blood and almost non existent if it were a Muggle Born. This is called the Inner Eye and has the ability to see into the future. Seers predict prophecies, which are then recorded and stored in the Hall of Prophecy in the Ministry of Magic's Department of Mysteries. According to Minerva McGonagall, true Seers are extremely rare. The predictions given through this ability can sometimes be self-fulfilling prophecies. However, not all predictions come true, depending on the choices made by those mentioned. This would seem to indicate that a Seer predicts possible or likely events, at least in some cases.
Depending on their age - if they're young, they can only see a few weeks in advance. However, if they're older, they can see much further in to the future and more accurate.
