With cobbled white stone on the ground, tall vines of ivy climbing the walls of the castle, the Courtyard is a great place to sit and study, or enjoy the sun in between of classes.

The lawns are wide and flat, opposite the castle from the forest and Hagrid's hut where the first-years took their first flying lesson. The sloping lawns also lead down toward the forest and border the lake.

Flying Lessons for first years are also held here on the lawns, including Advanced flying for older students.

Lead down from the slope of the Lawns of Hogwarts, the Black Lake is located to the south of the castle, which stands on a cliff overlooking the water. The lake is approximately a half-mile in diameter and various creatures live in the lake, including the giant squid, merfolk and grindylows. Just be careful when going for a swim and don't disrupt the creatures.

There are three large Greenhouses around the back of Hogwarts castle.

Herbology classes are held in the greenhouses and include plenty of hands-on activities, including pruning alihotsy bushes, repotting mandrakes, and harvesting bubotuber pus. Students are also assigned essays as homework, and hands on experience in practical tests.

Outside of the greenhouses, holds a few beds of flowers and opposite the flowers, are the vegetable gardens.

The Owlery, where the school owls and the owls belonging to students live, is located on the top of West Tower.

It is a circular stone room, rather cold and drafty, because none of the windows had glass in them. The floor was entirely covered in straw, owl droppings, and the regurgitated skeletons of mice and voles. Hundreds upon hundreds of owls of every breed imaginable were nestled here on perches that rose right up to the top of the tower, nearly all of them asleep, though here and there a round amber eye glares down at students.

The school has its own Quidditch pitch where each house's Quidditch teams practice and play games against each other. Each year will see a total of six inter-house matches, along with numerous training sessions by each house team.

The Quidditch Gate is the entrance to the Quidditch Pitch. It is flanked by two stone structures which resemble two of the spectator towers surrounding the pitch. Inside the gate, several trophies and shields are housed. Through the gates leads to a steep winding downhill decent from the vicinity of the Covered Bridge.

To the east of Hogwarts castle is a large, dark forest. This forest is strictly off limits to Hogwarts students, except in the course of occasional Care of Magical Creatures lessons or detentions.

The forest is thick with trees -- beech, oak, pine, sycamore, and yew grow there, as well as undergrowth such as knotgrass and thorns -- but there are paths, brooks, and some clearings. Off the path, the way is almost impassable, although people have moved through it and creatures as large as Acromantulas and a Ford Anglia have managed to get around.

The forbidden forest is home to a wide and strange assortment of creatures. Anything wild and dangerous that needs a place to live is put there. Students found near the edge or in the forest will not only be punished suitably by the Headmistress, but might also already have been punished by the creatures that lurk within.
